Tennis Coordinator’s Welcome Note

Anthony Kountouris
Tennis Coordinator
Rhodes Tennis Team, Head Coach
akountouris@rhodes2007.info

First of all I would like to invite you all to the 2007 NatWest Island Games Tennis Tournament. My team and I are very excited at the opportunity to host such a big tournament in Rhodes. We promise you that it is going to be one of the best ever tournaments in Island Games history. We are working very hard for it, and look forward to seeing you all.

The event will take place at Rhodes Tennis Club, which will be the only site at which matches will take place. The men are going to compete on 4 green-set courts, and the women on 4 clay courts. The events that will take place are: Team event, Singles, Doubles and Mixed doubles.

The Competition is scheduled to start on the morning of the 30th of June, before the Opening Ceremony and end on the 6th of July, just before the Closing Ceremony. Our aim is to conclude all disciplines.

I have competed 3 times in the Island Games and I think it is a great opportunity and experience for every athlete. I have made many friends and I can’t wait to see them again after 4 years, since in the Shetland 2005 NatWest Island Games there was no Tennis Tournament. I have won 3 gold medals in 1999 and 2001 and those memories will always be in my mind and heart.

Being a Coach and the Tennis Coordinator for the next NatWest Island Games, is a challenge that I am happy to take, and I promise you that I will work hard, so that everyone will be happy and satisfied on Friday July the 6th, the conclusion of the Games.

I would be very happy to answer any of your questions. My email is akountouris@rhodes2007.info. Thanks for reading this Welcome note, and I hope that everyone is as excited as I am for the NatWest Island Games XII, Rhodes 2007, where TENNIS IS BACK!!!

Rhodes Tennis Competing Team for the 2007 Rhodes NatWest Island Games

The Rhodes Tennis Team wants to continue the tradition they have at the NatWest Island Games. Having won medals in all the competitions since Gotland 1999, where they competed for the first time, they now have the opportunity to win some more in front of their home crowd. Rhodes won 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals at 1999 Games, 2 gold and 2 bronze medals at the 2001 Games, and 1 bronze medal at the 2003 Games. Anthony Kountouris (5 medals) and Stayroula Genimanoli (4 medals) are the coaches assigned with the task of preparing the 2007 tennis team. They both agree that having all the players that won medals in the previous games back, and with the addition of Giortsou, Kontakis and few more new faces, the team will be very strong and compete for the top spots.

New faces for Rhodes Tennis Team are going to compete at NatWest Island Games

Natalia Giortsou

Natalia Giortsou was born on December 28th 1991 in Rhodes, Greece. She trains at the Rhodes Tennis Club, under the direction of her coach Anthony Kountouris (Tennis Coordinator for the 2007 Rhodes NatWest Island Games). Her dream is one day to become a professional tennis player and to compete at the Grand Slam level. Good luck Nat!!!

Natalia Giortsou, is 14 years old, ranked number 2 nationally, and will be an exciting new face for Rhodes NatWest Island Games Tennis Team.
In 2003 she won the Greek “Under 12 years” Championships in doubles, and was ranked in the 8 best players in Greece for her age. This year Natalia won 2 national tournaments and reached the finals 5 times (singles and doubles), all of them in the Under 14 age category. She is ranked number 2 in Greece and is an international player having participated in European junior tournaments in FYROM, Austria, Malta and Patras (Greece) reaching the finals once. Competing in those tournaments she became the highest ranked Greek player in Europe (Girls Under 14 category).
Natalia, who is going to compete for the first time at the NatWest Island Games, is very excited at the prospect. “It is a great opportunity and an honor for me to compete for my island Rhodes, at the NatWest Island Games.!!!!”

Good luck Nat!!!

Nick Kontakis

Nick, who is 17 years old ranked number 18 nationally, is going to compete for the first time at the NatWest Island Games. Competing at the NatWest Island Games became one of his dreams, since he was 11 years old and heard about the Gotland 1999 Island Games, when Rhodes competed for the first time.

This year he reached the quarter-finals once at a national tournament. He won first place at the island’s local tournament in the Men’s and Under 18 category. He has one year left to compete at the “Under 18 years” category, and his goal for next year is to be ranked in the national top ten.

He is being trained by Anthony Kountouris at the Rhodes Tennis Club. His life at this stage is dedicated to both school (senior at high school) and tennis, and his future goal is to study and become a tennis coach.

Good luck Nick!!!
